450 jobs hope under plans for Hayle retail site
Thursday, September 05, 2013
HUNDREDS of new jobs could be created in Hayle as part of a £35 million plan for several major retailers to move in.
The proposed 90,000sq ft development, next to the West Cornwall Shopping Park, would include 11 units, such as Debenhams, River Island, TK Maxx and H&M.
Up to 450 jobs would be brought to the area, according to Cranford Developments, the company responsible for developing the shopping park in 2006.
Eight stores are being proposed, with three catering units, including Frankie and Benny's and Caffè Nero.
Bill Oakley, chairman of Cranford Developments, said: "Our plan is to develop a site next to the existing West Cornwall Shopping Park, reinforcing Hayle as one of Cornwall's leading shopping destinations. It will bring Debenhams and other leading UK retailers to the town.
"We think it is important that developers listen to what local people think. We find that listening to local people at an early stage and working in partnership with the community improves the quality of our proposals for all. That is why we are asking local people about their views now and we hope people will come along to the exhibition next week."
The development would also include improvements to the surrounding roads and increase access to the shopping park.
A mini-roundabout and a new bus stop at Marsh Lane, a pedestrian link to the existing shops, and the transformation of the old railway line to improve access for cyclists, are included.
An enhanced wildlife site would also be created.
Debenhams has announced interest in taking on a 31,000sq ft premises, a similar size to the existing Marks & Spencer.
Rob Hadfield, director of property acquisitions at Debenhams, said: "We are delighted to be part of this exciting project. This is the right development in the right location, which gives us the confidence to expand our offer in Cornwall with a store that can accommodate our full range of home and fashion products."
This week, Cranford Developments has delivered more than 4,000 leaflets to homes in the area to consult with residents before submitting its proposal to Cornwall Council at the end of the year.
Hayle Mayor Jayne Ninnes said: "I am very much looking forward to seeing the full details of the scheme. I am looking forward particularly to discussing how they make it accessible and how they would protect the village of Angarrack.
"There are some significant issues to be resolved. It's a major retail development and it is important the town centre is protected. If the developers are prepared to work with businesses in the town, it could be a benefit."
Mrs Ninnes acknowledged that the development would make the town a major destination for shoppers.
She added: "It would make us one of the biggest shopping destinations in Cornwall. It could be very good for the people of Hayle."
If approved, work could start in summer 2014, with a view to opening the new stores by autumn 2015.
An exhibition will be held at the Passmore Edwards Institute on September 14, between 10am and 4pm, for local residents and businesses to discuss the proposals with the developer.
