RNLI lifeguards at Hayle revive collapsed man
Lifeguards News Release
- Date: 05/09/2013
Author: Tamsin ThomasRNLI lifeguards at Peter’s Point in Hayle were able to offer immediate assistance when a man in his sixties collapsed right by their hut today (Thursday 5 September).
The charity’s team provided the visitor with vital casualty care until he was airlifted to hospital.
The incident happened at round 2.30pm this afternoon when the man collapsed at the top of steps near the lifeguard hut at Peter’s Point. RNLI lifeguard Josh Newing immediately responded and started to carry out cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the man who was unconscious and not breathing.
Josh was then joined by colleague James Bannister who had grabbed the resuscitation kit used by the lifeguard team. Shortly after this the lifeguards were also joined by a paramedic and members of the local coastguard team. As a result of the care provided to the casualty he was conscious by the time he was airlifted away to the Royal Cornwall Hospital Treliske in Truro.
Phil Drew, RNLI Lifeguard Manager, says the quick reaction of the team undoubtedly helped;
‘Josh was very quickly able to assist as the man collapsed right by the hut and James too was able to help within a short space of time. It’s moments like this when all the training kicks in and the lifeguards, paramedic and the coastguards worked together to help give the casualty every assistance. Our thoughts are now with the man who we hope will make a full recovery.’
There’s only three more days until the end of the lifeguard season at Peter’s Point with patrols ending there at the close of the day on Sunday 8 September.
