Hayle Harbour Redevelopment
1 / Introduction
Hayle Harbour was constructed in the mid 18th century and until the 1970s served as one of Cornwall’s major industrial harbours. Located within the Hayle Estuary on the southern side of St Ives Bay on the north-west coast of Cornwall, the harbour forms a significant part of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site.
Loss of industry in the region and the increased use of the improved road networks across the UK led to a rapid decline in the commercial use of the harbour. A number of regeneration initiatives were started over the past thirty years that ultimately failed until ING Real Estate Company acquired the site in 2003 and brought a fresh approach to the planning and restoration of the derelict harbour.
Hayle Harbour Authority (HHAL) manages the harbour as a public harbour undertaking and is responsible for the tidal waters, harbour premises and the estuary byelaws. Buro Happold’s work is ongoing working towards a regeneration programme that involves diverse bodies including the Environment Agency, Natural England and the Highways Agency. So far we have delivered an extensive range of engineering services for the HHAL. As we deliver each key milestone for our client and ultimately the local people of Hayle we continue to stretch ourselves and increase our local knowledge and understanding.
We take pride in helping to ensure that Hayle Harbour’s future, both commercially and environmentally, is secure and in turn we have safeguarded a key piece of the UK’s industrial heritage nominated on the UNESCO World Heritage list 2006 for future generations to enjoy.
